THEME SONG
Manny was a copy editor. He worked for the Daily Sun
Working by himself one night he had some prankster fun,
He made a silly headline typo, and the presses began to run.
The banal little blunder cost Manny his job,
His boss just laughed not even a sob,
(didn't even give him his severance pay man..)

They had Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
AKA Utopia! Utopia... trippin' out on life itself...

They had Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
They slipped into the rhythm of the Universe!

They had Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
and they decided to stay!

He gave Manny his check with a token lotto ticket, and he said,
Now get on your way, shut the door as you go.
Then the numbers began to appear, 8-6-7-5-3-0
Manny, he exploded in glee, as he could clearly see
He knew he had a winner. Seventy five million, enough to cover dinner.
Next thing you know hes off to Malibu with his niece named Raven
They took a wrong turn and discovered a canyon haven.

They had Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
AKA Utopia! Utopia... Trippin out on life itself.

They has Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
They slipped into the rhythm of the Universe

They had Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
And they decided to stay.

They bought the cellar downstairs for a retro cantina bar.
Next thing you know locals come from way afar
from up the canyon, down the canyon.
Including Ozo, the Leahys, their teen kids, Megan and Zeke
and Raha, the artist, Naomi the sweet masseuse,
Luda Mae the satellite gal. Sebastian the yogi.
and Chad... the token surfer boy
you will see them all and more...

Having Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
AKA Utopia! Utopia... Trippin out on life itself.

They has Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
They slipped into the rhythm of the Universe

please come and join us and share a laugh with us locals

Having Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
AKA Utopia! Utopia, trippin' out on life itself...

Having Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga!
AKA Utopia! Utopia... trippin' out on life itself...

They had Breakfast in Topanga! Breakfast in Topanga...

SITCOM OVERVIEW

Picture
Breakfast in Topanga is a fresh,  alternative, organic, animated, situation comedy with a plethora of colorful, ethic. offbeat, characters. In short, it is about a closet lotto winner who moves from Tucson to Topanga (where nobody knows him) with his niece. They open up a  retro, cantina, bar downstairs from the diner.

PILOT SYNOPSIS

Picture
The first couple of minutes of the pilot episode commence in Tucson, Arizona. Manny Montoya, a gleeful, forty year-old (Latino Kramer type) is fired from his job as a sports copy editor for making an unforgivable and huge sports headline typo.

"Arizona Beats ASSU 31-10!"

Divine retribution
occurs when his boss unknowingly gives Manny a winning lotto ticket along with his walking papers.

Taking a page from Jed Clampett, Manny decides to move to California after striking it rich. He decides to move to Malibu with Raven, his 18 year-old niece, who is an is an aspiring filmmaker. However, after taking the wrong freeway to Malibu, Manny and Raven turn off and eventually find themselves having breakfast in a Topanga Canyon diner. Topanga is a Utopian paradise to Manny and Raven. On a whim, they decide to buy the entire building (including the space downstairs) and stay in Topanga Canyon. Like the Beverly Hillbillies, this pilot exposition is told in the opening theme song as well.

Manny persuades Zeke to work for him as a barback at the new cantina much to the dismay of Zeke's dad, Hugo, who needs Zeke at the diner.  Raven wants to start filming open mike nights at the cantina (using real Topanga locals as extras) for her public access TV show. Megan is a computer nerd who pines to be a hacker when she grows up. She notices Manny’s computer in his office is unattended and she decides to do some snooping. She finds his online personal ad seeking a perky Aussie (preferably with red hair and high-sprout pigtails). Megan replies to Manny’s personal ad under the guise of one of her mother’s email addresses. She continues a steamy email correspondence with Manny.

Megan convinces her Mom to let her give her a bohemian makeover by tinting her hair red and braiding her pigtails prior to the Manny’s cantina’s grand opening. Megan assures Raven that she has a great idea to launch her new TV show. A virtual reality TV show about finding love online. At the Grand Opening, Manny agrees to allow Megan to be the MC for the open mike. He is stunned when Megan announces her mother’s online screen name (to sing a song) and Lily appears on stage donning her new fringe look for the first time.

MAIN CHARACTERS

MANNY MONTOYA

Picture
A gleeful, hyper, athletic, extroverted, environmental, quirky, offbeat (Latino Kramer type) intellectual man with a plethora of wild ideas and theories. Even though he loves to show off his various character voices on occasion, he opts to remain both a closet comedian and a closet lotto winner.

HUGO LEAHY

Picture
An early 40s, Irishman from Staten Island who has a problem with recycling (actually, a anti-recycler with bad karma) and thinks he sings like Sinatra. A regressive NRA member  who runs the Canyon Cafe with his ex-wife. Hugo is perceived as a square peg in Topanga Canyon due to his extreme, conservative, far-right slants on life.

ZEKE LEAHY

OZO MAHAFI

Picture
A lanky, mellow, sinewy Jamaican  musician who serves as the objective voice in the middle while Hugo and Manny banter extreme contrasting views on various topics. The accident totals her guitar and bends the front wheel of her bicycle so Manny offers her a job as the bartender of the Cellar.

RAVEN MONTOYA

Picture
The 18-year-old niece of Manny who aspires to be a filmmaker, which prompts her desire to move to California with him. She is an avid reader, a lacto-ovo vegetarian who dreams of opening up a Youth Hostel in the Topanga Canyon (possible spin-off?) so she can meet intelligent European backpacker types.

LILY LEAHY

Picture
Hugo’s slender, perky,  39 year-old, Aussie ex-wife, a balanced, fun, accepting woman who likes to sing and she has no problem working alongside Hugo because as she humorously alludes to, "he’s never going to get any." In Episode 2, she has alternating fantasies, between Manny (whom she knows she melted in the end of the pilot episode) and her son’s mentor, Chad, who replaces Zeke as the server in their café.

MEGAN LEAHY

Picture
The Leahy’s cute, bratty, mischievous, rebellious 18-year-old daughter. She aspires to be a computer hacker. She is challenged by cracking complex codes, passwords and playing the digeridoo.
